Back from Vacation

“…because each day of not writing, of comfort, of being that which he despised, dulled his ability and softened his will to work so that, finally, he did no work at all.” - from  The Snows of Kilimanjaro by Ernest Hemingway

Well, after slacking off for a couple of weeks, I’m finally posting something.  This hiatus was due in part to a change in our day trip plans - they just weren’t cutting it as far as R & R goes.  We needed to get away from the daily routine, and thought that a road trip was in order.  Between planning for this last-minute voyage, to catching up at my day job after our return, and my first trip to the new Yankee Stadium, I found my quiet time that I use to write this blog to be almost nonexistent.  That, and the fact that like Hemingway’s character, I grew comfortable not using my gray matter, and settled into my vacation-mode leisure.

But like I wrote in this post, I’m seeking discomfort yet again.  So you can look forward to tales from our road trip to Virginia Beach, as well as my take on the new House that Ruth Built.  It’s good to flex those muscles again.

Corporate Barbarian Links: Another Day Closer to Death Edition

Victim of Time

I received some sad news this past week - one of my former coworkers died suddenly on his long commute home from work.  Thank God he pulled over to the side of the road, or he probably would have taken some other poor slobs with him (he lived in the Bronx).

The sad part was that he lived alone, with no wife or kids.  Another guy who worked with him thought it was sad that he’ll leave no trace of himself to carry on.  He was a gruff-sounding guy, probably due to his 2-pack-a-day smoking habit.  But he was a good person underneath his hard exterior.  He coached Little League baseball, even though he had no kids of his own, and he always helped me when I needed it.  I know I’ll miss him.

The passing of someone I know always leads me to confront my own mortality.  I’ve taken better care of myself this week, regarding my eating, exercise, and sleeping habits.  I’ve also immersed myself in some positive reading:

Barbaric Update: Back From Atlantis

I haven’t posted at much this week, because I was soaking up the sun and scenery here:

Palm Tress at the Atlantis

Palm Trees at the Atlantis

We went to the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.  To quote Peter Griffin, it was freakin’ sweet!

We spent 4 nights at the Coral Towers, one of the hotels in the older part of the Atlantis Resort.  The weather was beautiful, and the ocean was just incredible.  We don’t have clear water like that around where I live.

We ate in some great restaurants in the hotel, including the Bahamian Club and the Atlas Bar & Grill.  The Bahamian Club was considered a “gourmet” restaurant, while the Atlas, located right off of the casino, was more casual.  We also dined on hot dogs by the pool.  The only drawback, other than the high prices, was the lack of Sam Adams lager.  I made due by drinking Kalik, the local beer.

Cash is not accepted at any of the restaurants or bars, so you have the option of using credit cards or charging it back to your room.  Thankfully, we were on the meal plan.  This gets you breakfast and dinner.  You only pay for lunch and alcohol, and they add a 15% gratuity to your bill.  For EVERYTHING.  I mean, even my hot dog by the pool was assessed a gratuity.

The best deal was the buffet breakfast at the Waters’ Edge restaurant.  This included omelets, sausage, bacon, french toast, pastries, fruit, you name it.  We loaded up here, and I was ready for a nap at 9 am.

It was a little strange spending Easter away from home, but it definitely helped to recharge my batteries.  I would recommend the Atlantis for a vacation, but I’m sure you can get better rates during the summer.
