Productivity Tip: Script Your Action Items to Vanquish Procrastination

Just like an NFL quarterback, having a defined script will help you blast through procrastination and start your day productively. This is the productivity version of the West Coast Offense. Each NFL quarterback has a wide wristband that lists his plays for the game.

But many teams have their first offensive series “scripted”, where the quarterback will run a number of plays that have been predetermined. While the quarterback will use this to pick out the other team’s defensive weaknesses, we can use the same strategy to kick-start our workday.

The quarterback’s wristband is our equivalent of a to-do list. The script is our equivalent of our most important items on the to-do list. By taking care of these early in the day, we put a big dent in our action item list. This will keep our momentum going, just like Eli Manning’s offense.

But just as an NFL team practices their plays and writes their “script” before the game begins, we must write our own script ahead of time. Take 15 minutes before you go home at night to plan out your next morning. It will give you a feeling of control over your job, rather than vice versa. When you get in the next day, instead of deciding what to do first, you can hit the ground running!
