My First Year in Review

Birthday Cake
Photo by Theresa Thompson

I can’t believe that the Corporate Barbarian Blog is a year old today!  Boy, I’ve sure learned a lot in the past year.  Last February, I was a blogging noob, and now, while I can’t say that I’m a seasoned veteran, at least I’m less of a noob.  Here’s a selection of my favorite posts from my first year.  I hope that you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

February 2009

November 2009

December 2009

January 2010

Are You on “Lombardi Time”? - You had to be doing something right to get the Super Bowl trophy named in your honor.  It’s all about preparation and respect for others.

I’m especially excited that now I can have features like “A Year Ago on The Corporate Barbarian”, and act like I’ve been doing this for a long time.  A big Thank You to everyone who’s taken the time to read my posts, especially those who’ve subscribed via email or an RSS reader.  Stay tuned for more of my belligerent ramblings.

September 2009 Recap

September 09

September was a good month, if you’re a New York sports fan.  The Bombers clinched another division title, and the Giants are undefeated.  Now, if A.J. Burnett can get himself straightened out, and the Giants don’t suffer any more injuries, October should be even better!

Shark Tank

Shark Attack
Photo by Kecko

I started watching the TV show Shark Tank a few weeks ago.  It consists of an entrepreneur pitching his or her business model to five “sharks”, rich investors that can buy a piece of the entrepreneur’s company.  While there are some viable ideas, most of the time the sharks shoot down the entrepreneur’s plan.  Call it a wake-up call for a misguided dreamer.

In that vein, a recent Yahoo! Small Business Article listed the 7 most overrated businesses.  With the recent surge of layoffs, people have been tempted to start their own businesses.  Here’s the list:

Restaurants -60% of restaurants close in the first three years, due to low profit margins and the absence of strong, tight-ship-running managers.

Direct Sales -You’ve seen the ads on TV.  Work from home.  Be your own boss.  But beware of these pyramid schemes, where only the people at the top make the big bucks by getting a cut of their recruit’s commissions.

Online Retail -It’s harder for new sellers to compete with more established retailers.  Successful online retailers must have a handle on sourcing their products at a low enough price, and being able to market them effectively.

High-End Retail -Specialty retail businesses close at a higher rate than non-specialty stores.  With conspicuous consumption down due to the economy, people are spending less on luxuries.

Independent Consulting -Consultants must be able to navigate through the income peaks and valleys.  Professor Dennis Ceru of Boston College says:

“A successful consulting firm needs people to find the work, grind out the work and mind the work. Unless you know you can do all three yourself, you potentially expose your business to great risk.”

Franchise Ownership -There are risks to franchisees, such as restrictive agreements and market saturation.  It’s also a myth that franchises are more successful than independent businesses.  62% of franchises are open after 4 years, compared to 68% of independent businesses.

Traffic-Driven Web Sites - As the internet ages, it will be harder for blogs to generate all of their revenue from advertising (Note to self: start writing that eBook!).  Martin Zwilling, a start-up consultant, says:

“Until you get to the point where you have a million page views a day, you’re nowhere.”

Looks like I’ve got a long way to go.  But don’t count me out yet, I’m just getting started!

Have you tried starting your own business?  Were you successful?  What were your biggest challenges?  Let’s hear from my fellow bloggers about what worked and what didn’t.

Corporate Barbarian Links: Sports Physical Edition

bloodpressure31bcai1rldl_sl160_

My son had his sports physical this week.  Two doctors had to accommodate hundreds of high school athletes.  Needless to say, the wait was a long one.  I waited in the car, and a baseball game on the car radio would have passed the time, but the Yankees were playing a late game in Oakland.  I’m glad that I brought a book.  Hemingway was good company.  I love his short stories:

hemingway51btffq4x7l_sl160_

Here are some great posts from the last week:

Steve at Brip Blap relates a story about packs of wild dogs in Bucharest, and how he overcame his fear of them.  He eventually made them fear him.  It’s a great example of facing and overcoming your fears.

Katie at Frugal Urbanite thinks the PF blog sphere has become boring.  She thinks that personal finance bloggers are afraid to be a little different.  I’ll take her advice, and try to keep things interesting.  That’s why I also blog about coffee addiction, survival kits, and my crazy neighbor.

Craig Harper has a great post about changing your personal reality at Stepcase Lifehack.  He shares eight strategies that may not be comfortable to implement, but are effective in helping you take control of your life.

Jared at Technotheory wants us to stop waiting for others and forge ahead.  He says it becomes clear who gets things done, and who is suited for government work.

Five Cent Nickel warns about taking frugality too far.  Don’t cross that line where you start making yourself and others miserable by taking foolish risks.

Brad at Persistence Unlimited wants us to BF Skinnerize our commitments to get through the rough patches.  He talks about using rewards as well as punishments to keep ourselves on track.

David at My Two Dollars reveals the man who’s still driving a 1929 Ford Model A.  He’s a throwback in our throw-away society.

Jason at Dumb Little Man offers 8 great ways to motivate yourself when you just don’t feel like it.  Everyone hits a lull, and one of these might be the tonic to snap you out of complacency.

Have a great weekend!

Are Depression-Era Values Back in Style?

Homeless
chrisbastian44

I spoke with one of my friends today, a former coworker.  He’s a handy guy who does most of his own home improvement work.  He’s not afraid of large-scale projects like concrete patios or kitchen remodeling, and usually rents a dumpster for all of the debris.  During his kitchen remodel a few years ago, his neighbors kept putting their bags of grass clippings in his dumpster, much to his chagrin.  He wondered what gave them the right to use up the space he was paying for.  This weekend, something unexpected happened.

He’s replacing the siding on his house, and again rented a dumpster to hold the old siding.  Early one morning, he heard a noise by the dunpster, and assumed it was one of the neighbors putting their junk in his dumpster.  But he wasn’t getting a donation this time.  The guy was pulling stuff out of the dumpster.    What was going on?  Did he wake up in Bizarro World?

The next day, the same thing happened.  A different guy was crawling around in the dumpster, picking out every piece of metal that he could get his hands on.  It reminded me of the Great Catalytic Converter Grab, where thieves were slicing off the precious metal-laden components with battery-powered Sawzalls:

sawzall413jqxnru-l_sl160_

Tool of choice for catalytic converter thieves everywhere! Get yours today!

Is this a return to Depression-Era values?  Is frugality back in?  Will roving bands of cheapskates be congregating at a dumpster near you?  Will they use Twitter to pull together their Project Mayhem-style flash mobs?  And will they chant “His name was Robert Paulson” over and over?  Oh, the horror…

OK, I’m getting a little ahead of myself here.  But these neo-dumpster divers didn’t live through the Great Depression (the two guys were in their 40’s).  Maybe they’re taking a page out of Grandpa’s playbook in order to pick up a little extra dough.  It reminds me of one of my uncles, who scoured the streets of his Queens neighborhood for useful junk (he did live through the Great Depression).  His favorite expression was “Waste not, want not.”

Maybe history is repeating itself.

HONEY, HAVE YOU SEEN MY  SAWZALL?

My question to you: Have you ever gone dumpster-diving?  Let us know in the comments.

My First 100 Days

Birthday Cake
Theresa Thompson

Yesterday was Day 100 of this blog.  Since people like to examine the first 100 days of new regimes, I figured that I’d throw out some statistics, just in case you were curious.  I know I was curious, and amazed.  Amazed that anyone would read my stuff.  Here are the numbers:

Number of posts: 67

Number of comments/pingbacks: 94

Number of spam comments: 1,404 (from Askimet)

Number of subscribers: 23 (from Feedburner)

Number of visits: 959 (from Google Analytics)

Number of pageviews: 1,626 (from Google Analytics)

Three months ago, I never would have dreamed that anyone would want to listen to my ramblings.  Well, you’ve proved me wrong.  Maybe I do have an audience.  I also didn’t know how to use Twitter, and some people will probably say that I still don’t know how to tweet.  But I’m trying to get better (I won’t go on Facebook because I’ve been known to break cameras.  One new social medium at a time).  I’d like to thank you for taking the time to visit the Corporate Barbarian, and a special thanks to everyone who’s left a comment.

So please, come back again!  Remember, if you leave a comment, and you’re signed up at CommentLuv, you’ll get a free plug to one of the posts on your blog.  So keep those great comments coming in!  I’ll post some new drivel starting tomorrow.

Barbaric Links, New “About” Page Edition

Passive Family Income had this recent post about the types of posts he hates to write.  His dilemma was similar to mine, as I struggle with writing about really personal things.  Like my About page.  I commented that I thought mine was pretty generic, and that I would probably go back and revise it.  Well, that day has come.  Check out my new and improved About page, and then come back to this post and let me know what you think in the comments.

Now, on to some posts that are WAY better than the drivel I produce:

David at My Two Dollars reminds us to live today while planning for the future;

Matt has a guest post at Five Cent Nickel that asks: Is personal responsibility dead?;

Clever Dude tells us the only failure is failing to learn;

Peter at Bible Money Matters reminds us that hard times make us stronger;

Jacob at Early Retirement Extreme asks: which 5 blogs do you read?;

Steve at Brip Blap talks about making money with credit cards;

Five Cent Nickel debates whether paying off your mortgage early is better than investing;

Lazy Man and Money shows us how to save money by turning off your TV;

Fred Lee at Wise Bread doesn’t want his boss bothering him while he’s daydreaming;

Trent at The Simple Dollar talks about health and money and the power of independent steps;

Free Money Finance shows us how to increase our salary;

and my favorite post of the week:
